Want God More

Do I want God more than anything?

I want to be successful – but do I want God more than that?

I want my kids to be healthy and happy, and to be serving the Lord with their lives – but do I want God more?

I want my marriage to reflect Christ and the church and I want my spouse and me to look out for and serve each other well and the Lord with all our strength.

But when it comes down to what I want most:

As a matter of first importance in my mind and heart, and displayed in my actions –

Do I want God more?

I want to love others well, to see the lost reached with the Good News of Jesus.

I want the hurts of the world stopped and the hurting to be healed.

I want justice.

But do I want God more than all these very good things?

Want God

Want His presence in my life and it shows by my surrender to His will.

Want His will as first priority and it shows when I withdraw my need to control.

Want His leadership and it shows in my increased desire to pray.

I want many good things.

But even good things can usurp God’s rightful place in my heart.

Good things are good, as long as they are not in first place.

But when a very good thing creeps up to become “the thing”,

My tricky heart gives in to the mirage and I find myself a captive.

So in all things, I must ask myself,

Do I want God more than I want that?

And when I do, God frees me from my need for that…

The thing (even the very good thing).

And chains I didn’t know existed, fall away.

Then I turn my face to God and want Him more than I want anything.

I push all things, even good things, out of first place.

And I want God more.

“So in all things I must ask myself, ‘Do I want God more than that?'” Yes. Thanks for writing and helping us think through this question.
